Philadelphia Pediatric hand and upper limb fellowship

Based at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia, the fellowship provides two fellowship trained Hand Surgeons further training in Pediatric Hand Surgery. The Fall Fellowship begins August 1st and ends January 31st, and the Spring Fellowship begins February 1st and ends July 31st. We may be a able to provide a stipend on a case by case basis, but the expectation is that the fellow will be self-funded. For the Spring Fellowship, we can arrange for the fellow to travel internationally and domestically to other centers for additional training in the 6 months prior to our fellowship. In the past, fellows have travelled to Spain, France, Brazil, and India.

The fellow will participate in the clinic and the operating room under the guidance of Drs. Dan Zlotolow, Eugene Park, and Scott Kozin. Participation in research is also expected, with one submitted publication required for graduation. The typical week will include 3 surgical days and 2 clinic days, with academic time as the schedule allows.

During the 6 months of fellowship, the super fellow will overlap with one of the seven fellows from the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center. The remaining 6 months of the year, we also train hand fellows from Washington University in St. Louis, Allegheney General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Rothman Orthopaedics, and the University of Pittsburgh. The University of Pennsylvania Hand and Microsurgery Fellows will also rotate with us on an ad-hoc basis for free tissue transplantation. Overall, we have trained over 150 fellows that are now practicing throughout the country from Florida to Alaska and as far as Chile and Barcelona.

We have a resident on service year-round from Cooper, Einstein, Jefferson, or Temple Hospitals. The 6 month senior fellow is expected to assist with resident education and mentorship.

Educational conferences include weekly indications conference on Wednesday morning, as well as industry sponsored dinner and cadaver labs on Tuesday nights. Several local citywide Hand Surgery meetings and symposia are also held throughout the year.
